Volunteering at the Library

Kathleen Waelde, Paws to Read Program Coordinator, has been chosen as the Library’s Volunteer of the Year. Kathleen worked with the Library to establish the program last fall after hearing about the Library’s need through the Leadership Livermore Alumni Network.  In her role as program coordinator, Kathleen coordinates with the Library to set the program schedule, schedules the dogs and owners, contacts the families who are registered to participate, oversees the program on program days, publicizes the program to the schools, and more. Over the course of the year, she held 30 Paws to Read programs with a total of more than 500 children in attendance. Her hard work and dedication have made Paws to Read a successful part of the Library’s literacy efforts!

Dennis Elchesen has been chosen as the Livermore READ Project’s Volunteer of the Year.  Dennis, a former LLNL employee, joined the READ Project in January 1999.   As a tutor, Dennis meets with his student on a weekly basis, tailoring his lessons to meet any specific or pressing needs.   Dennis was matched to his current student, Isabel, in 2001, and they have reached many milestones together.   Isabel’s most recent accomplishment was to pass the U.S. Citizenship test, and Dennis was right there in the audience at her swearing-in ceremony cheering her on.   Dennis has always been generous with both his time and his talents, and his dedication, patience, and enthusiasm make him an excellent tutor.  The Livermore Library and the Livermore READ Project are very fortunate to have him as a volunteer.

The Livermore Public Library is grateful for the generous help provided by these two volunteers and by the many other volunteers who serve in various ways throughout the library.
