You can continue to search the Livermore Public Library catalog from your home computer by dialing in to our catalog through your modem.
- If you are using Windows 95, you can use its built-in communication program, HyperTerminal. You'll find instructions here.
- If you are using other software for communication, follow your modem's software instructions.
- The phone number of our catalog's modem is 373-5519 (or 925-373-5519).
- When you get a cursor, press return or enter to get a colon prompt ( : ) on the left side of your screen.
- Type hello public.library then press return.
- Wait a few seconds for the program to start, then follow the instructions on the screen to access the catalog.
- Some of the commands that you may find helpful are:

If you have a valid Library Card, you can place a hold on any title and you will be notified when it is available. You will need to type in your library patron number and your birthdate when asked.
- When you are finished looking at the catalog, type exit to quit the program.
- If you have any problems using the Dial-up Catalog, please call the Technical Services Department, 925-373-5511, Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Start Programs/Accessories/HyperTerminal
- A window with icons appears
- Double-click HyperTerm
- Connection Description window appears
- Enter a name for the connection to the library (e.g., Library)
- Choose an icon by highlighting it (move the scroll bar to see all the choices)
- OK
- Phone Number window appears
- Country code - United States
- Area code - 925
- Phone number you want to call - 3735519
- Connect using - (Your modem should be in the box)
- OK
- Connect window appears
- Phone number is there!
- Your location - (default)
- (Use Dialing Properties if you need to dial 9 for an outside line, disable call waiting, or change to pulse dialing)
- Click on DIAL
- When screen goes blank, press enter to get the MPE XL: prompt
- At the prompt, type hello public.library
- Press enter.
- Wait a few seconds for the program to respond and follow the onscreen directions.
- When finished using the catalog, type exit
- When "End of Program" appears, you may exit HyperTerminal either by clicking on the X in the upper right corner of the window or by clicking File-Exit.
- A window appears asking if you want to save the session you just created - YES
- A new icon will appear in the HyperTerminal window for this session which you can then use the next time you want to access the catalog.
