Frequently Asked Questions

If you have further questions or would like an explanation of the FAQ’s below, please contact the City of Livermore at 960-8002 or via email at solidwaste_recycling@ci.livermore.ca.us

  • What is the proper way to set my carts out onto the curb?
Carts should be on the street at least 3 feet apart (click here for pdf diagram*) with wheels against the curb. The handle of the cart should be toward the house. You can put the used motor old jugs on the curb in between the carts.

  • Can I recycle plastic bags?
Not in your recycling cart! They must be put in the garbage cart.

The Albertson's stores (1951 Holmes, 2000 Portola), the Safeway stores (1554 First Street, 4495 First Street) and the Nob Hill (919 East Stanley) all recycle plastic grocery bags in-store.

  • What can I recycle?
Livermore has specific items that can be recycled, which may be different than other cities. Livermore is not able to recycle all materials that have the recycle logo, such as plastic bags. If you have questions regarding items that are not listed or pictured on the Recyclable Materials list (pdf)*, contact the Waste Management Customer Service Center at 447-1300. Please remember that NO plastic bags of any kind are allowed in your recycling cart! Many supermarkets recycle the plastic shopping bags.

  • Can I use containers other than the ones provided by Waste Management?
No. The automated collection trucks are designed to accept only the garbage and recycling containers provided by Waste Management. Other carts or cans cannot be used with this system.

  • Can I pay on-line?
Yes. Go to the Waste Management web page and click on Pay Your Bill.

  • Should I set my garbage cart out if it is not full?
Yes. Your garbage cart should be set out weekly, even if it is not full. You may wait until your recycling and green waste cart is full before setting it out on your regular collection day.

  • What if I want to change my cart size?
Residents and businesses may get a larger size recycling cart or bin at no extra charge (residents can chose from a 64-gallon or a 96-gallon recycling cart). A larger garbage cart can be provided at an increased cost. Call the Waste Management Customer Service Center at 447-1300.

  • I don’t need Waste Management to collect my garbage, recycling, or green waste. Do I have to set up service with them?
Yes. It is mandatory that all residents and businesses subscribe with Waste Management for solid waste cart collection services (which includes garbage, recyclable materials, and green waste). An exception from this requirement is allowed for residents if no food waste or no solid waste is generated from the home.

  • Can I leave my carts out on the street in between collection days?
No. The Livermore Municipal Code requires all carts to be collected off the street by midnight of the collection day. Carts must not be placed out for collection prior to sunset of the day preceding collection.

  • When do I need to put my carts out for collection?
By 6:00 a.m. of your regular collection day.

  • What if I can’t bring my carts to the curb?
If you are physically unable to bring your carts to the curb, you are eligible for backyard or sideyard service at no extra charge. A note from your physician is required. For more information call the Waste Management Customer Service Center at 447-1300.

  • Can I pay for backyard or sideyard service even if I am able to bring my carts to the curb?
Yes. This service is available at an increased Rate. Call the Waste Management Customer Service Center to set up the service at 447-1300 or check their web site rates page.

  • What is the collection schedule for Livermore Holidays?

  • My cart is damaged or stolen, what should I do?
Call the Waste Management Customer Service Center at 447-1300.

  • How do I dispose of large household items that don’t fit into my garbage cart?
Residents have two options for large items:
    • Residents are allowed three annual Clean-ups, from July 1 to June 30 at no extra cost. Residents can put out three cubic yards of allowable materials as part of the regular service. Call the Waste Management Customer Service Center at 447-1300 to set up an appointment and for information regarding which items are allowed.
    • Bulky items are not allowed in the regular clean-ups such as televisions, large kitchen appliances, used hot water heaters, or any other item that requires two people to carry comfortably. Waste Management will collect these items for a fee. Residents can contact the Waste Management Customer Service Center at 447-1300 to set up an appointment for the collection of bulky items and for more information.

  • What do I do with syringes, hypodermic needles, and test strips?
or visit www.wastemd.com for information and products to safely dispose of medical waste. You may also email a request to support@sharpsinc.com or call 1-877-927-8363.

  • What if I have garbage that will not allow the lid to close easily on the cart?
Your garbage must not be packed in the cart and the lid must be completely closed when you set it out or your garbage may not be collected. Overfilled carts are a violation of the Livermore Municipal Code and can lead to material spilling out onto the street when the cart is turned over.

If you frequently have more garbage than fits into your garbage cart, call Waste Management Customer Service Center at 447-1300 for a larger cart. You may also call Waste Management for the cost to collect the extra bag(s) on a one-time basis on your regularly scheduled collection day.

  • What if I have extra recycling or green waste that will not easily fit in my cart?
All materials must fit loosely in the carts or they will not empty completely or may spill out when turned upside down by the automated collection vehicle. Overfilled carts are a violation of the requirements in the Livermore Municipal Code and might not be collected by Waste Management.

Waste Management provides a standard 64-gallon recycling cart as part of the garbage service. You may call the Waste Management Customer Service Center at 447-1300 to have the standard 64-gallon recycling cart replaced with a 96-gallon recycling cart, at no extra cost.

Waste Management provides all residents with one 101-gallon green waste cart as part of the garbage service.

If you would like more recycling carts or green waste carts in addition to the carts provided as part of the regular garbage service, you may call the Waste Management Customer Service Center at 447-1300 to obtain the monthly cost for an additional cart .

  • What do I do with batteries, extra paint, or other hazardous waste?
You may drop of hazardous waste material at the Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste Facility http://www.household-hazwaste.org/livermore.html located in Livermore. The facility will take and safely dispose of hazardous materials for residents and small businesses free of charge. No appointment is necessary, but the facility is only open for certain hours each month. Please call 1-800-606-6606 or visit the website at www.household-hazwaste.org for more information. The facility is located at 5584 La Ribera Street in Livermore.

  • What happens to my recyclable materials and garbage after they are collected?
Recyclable materials and garbage are never mixed.
The recyclable materials are delivered to the Waste Management Recycling Facility in Lodi where the materials are sorted by machines and by hand. The separated materials are sold to processors who use it to make “new” products, such as cardboard, glass, or paper.
Garbage is taken to the Republic Services Vasco Road Landfill.
